When should you be worried when your pet is coughing?
First you have to distinguish coughing from other sounds you pet could make. Sneezing and snoring are easy to distinguish. Reverse sneezing is a sound a dog makes when the soft plate is in the wrong position, it is an inspirational sound.
Coughing can be one big cough, for instance if the dog drank water too quickly. Or a couple of harsh coughs if something got stuck in the throat. This is functional and will seize as soon as the throat is cleared.

Even though it seems to be a human disease, it is quite common in dogs and cats.
Diabetes Mellitus is a disease where the body cannot produce or use insulin to transport sugar (glucose) into the cells for energy.

In continuation from last month’s article about the City Council Law:

Article 22: The collection of animals in public places.

  1. An animal is considered abandoned if it has no identification and there is no owner around. If the animal does have identification (microchip) it is considered lost. The owner will be notified and has 5 days to collect and pay for the costs made. If the owner does not collect the animal, it will be considered abandoned but the owner is still held responsible.

As a foreigner in Spain it is not always clear what the exact rules are. Bear in mind that each municipality can have modified these rules slightly.

The Ayuntamiento de Marbella, delegación de salud, has stipulated the following rules for dogs.

Art 16. Registro Municipal de Animales de Compañía.

The owner of a companion animal is obliged to inscribe the animal at the town hall within 3 months after birth or within 1 month of buying or adopting the animal. The animals must be identified by means of a microchip.

With the Spanish culture comes the singing of the canaries from tiny cages in front of the houses. Canaries used to be taken into the mines because they are very sensitive to the oxygen content of the air. When the canary died, the miners knew they had to leave the mine. After the day at work they would be hung in front of the house for fresh air and communication with other birds.

Leishmaniosis is a tropical disease that affects mainly dogs in Spain. The “sand fly” (phlebotombus) sucks blood from a dog infected with leishmania, transforms them into infectious amastigotes and injects them into a healthy dog. Then two things can happen:  1. The dog has a good immune system and destroys the amastigotes or 2. It does not have a functional immune system (for whatever reason) or there are too many and the amastigotes infect the white blood cells, multiply inside the cell, destroy the white blood cell and each of the 4 new ones infect another 4 white blood cells, etc. Meanwhile healthy white blood cells try to destroy the infected white blood cells forming globulines which are too big for the small arteries in the body and they get stuck, causing skin lesions (ie at the tip of the ears, nose, feet), kidney damage, liver damage, intestinal damage etc. Untreated it will lead to death.

The pine processionary caterpillar is the best known of all the processionaries, the insect is found in the warmer regions of southern Europe, the Near East, and North Africa.  It is the habit of the caterpillars to move over the ground in long head-to-tail processions and to sting with urticaring hairs, anyone who attempts to molest them that has brought the caterpillars to the attention of the public.
